By Lenna Green

If you’re good at making jewelry then starting your own home based jewelry business could be a gold mine for you. If you’re anything like me, once you make your mind up to “have a go” it’s easy to rush in amidst the excitement of it all. But this approach can bring you unstuck if you’re not careful. Start by taking a pen and paper and decide on the look and feel of your business. Think about all areas of the business from your work space through to how you are going to sell your designs.

Take Time To Plan Your Jewelry Making Business

Craft businesses can be easily operated from home – especially jewelry making businesses. Your supplies, components, and tools are small and will be easy to store and transport. Your work area and materials aren’t hazardous and probably won’t pose any major storage problems. Although if you have small children you will need to come up with some storage solutions for your smaller materials. Most people can easily run their business from one room in their home – I know people who don’t even devote an entire room to their business.

The Transition from Hobbiest to Professional

If you’ve been making jewelry as a hobby, starting to make jewelry for profit won’t take much more room. The transition from hobbyist to professional requires little or no adjustment in the way you manufacture your products. You may already have sufficient work space in the form of a shop or workroom. Because you will be increasing production volume, you will probably have to find or create adequate storage space, and you’ll want an office of some sort for attending to all the details of running a business. Otherwise, you probably already have most of the tools and other items you need.

Musting up the Confidence

What you may not have is confidence. Confidence is every bit as important as skill. You must have confidence in your craft, in yourself, and in your ability to run a business and sell your products. My goal is to help you develop that confidence by helping you understand how to successfully run your own business.

Don’t Undersell Yourself or Your Work

I know a lot of designers who are guilty of this one. In fact I have been guilty of downplaying my work and designs. It’s important to never think of your products as homemade, but rather as meticulously handcrafted to exacting standards. Handcrafted products are in great demand, because they provide customers with a quality you don’t often find: they’re handmade, they’re unique, and they can be individualized. Handcrafted jewelry often sells for a premium, because customers are willing to pay for something unique and special.

Should You Start Your Own Home Based Jewelry Business?

No one but you can determine whether or not you should start your own jewelry business, but certain indicators can lead you toward the right choice. Of course, if you have little or no skill, poor coordination, and no interest in getting better- find another business. If you don’t enjoy making jewelry, there’s no reason to start a business. If, on the other hand, you’re a competent artisan — even a good one — but have no patience for or interest in managing a business, then you’d better work for someone else and treat jewelry making as a hobby.

Even if the idea of being self-employed as a home-based craftsperson appeals to you, and you either have or are willing to get the necessary skills and knowledge, you still need to understand your strengths and weaknesses. This is part of the planning stage of your business. It’s a process that’s never too early to start and one you should continue throughout the life of your home based jewelry business.

Three Great Ways to Promote Your Handcrafted Jewelry Business

By L. Kay

Part of the amazing charm about bead jewelry is just how easy it can be for someone to sit down and learn the basic skills of jewelry making in a matter of a few hours. As any bead jeweler will tell you, creating jewelry is one of those skills that only takes a few minutes to learn, but a lifetime to master!

While it’s fun to sit around with some friends at a bead shop and all work on jewelry together there is a grim reality: if you’re all making jewelry to sell then there’s going to be a little competition between you and your friends for customers. In fact, bead jewelry has become so popular in recent years among just about everyone that I’ve heard some bead jewelry artists actually say they were quitting because there were too many people making jewelry and it was simply too difficult to sell anymore.

And while making jewelry pieces is fun and even easy at times, actually selling the pieces and building a business with clients and customers can be rather difficult, especially if you’ve never been a salesperson or run a business before.

Here are three ways you can promote your bead jewelry business without coming on too pushy or spending a lot of money on advertising.

Referral Bonus: On all your business cards you simply write the line “Receive $10 credit on any of my jewelry for every customer you refer!” How does this work? Let’s say I sold a beautiful glass bead necklace to my child’s daycare teacher. A week later the teacher’s sister contacts you and has you create a similar necklace for her. You go back to the daycare teacher and say that she now has a $10 credit to use at any time for any other piece of jewelry she wants to purchase from you. Once people get the idea this really catches on! People will be going out of their way to have their friends buy jewelry from you so that they get a credit.

Donate to a Charity Gift Auction: A lot of nonprofit groups, charities, schools and churches have gift auctions where they accept gifts from local vendors and then auction those gifts off to the higher bidder, keeping the money made at the auction. You can donate a collection of bead jewelry like a matching necklace, bracelet and earrings and prominently display your business card in front of your jewelry. For the whole evening people will be looking over gifts and seeing your jewelry and business card. If you can put a stack of business cards in front, do so. You might be surprised how many people contact you after the event and tell you that they didn’t win the auction but would love to see what else you have.

Mix Web Sales with Table Sales: Don’t try to sell all your bead jewelry at one venue or the other. The people who are really running success bead jewelry businesses are hustling and cross promoting themselves all the time. List your website on the business cards that you give out at craft shows (even if they don’t buy anything!) and mention the craft shows you’ll be attending on your website!

There you go, three low-pressure way to increase your customer base and get your bead jewelry in front of more people. These things might not generate lots of sales right away, but if you stick with it you’ll be amazed at how your bead jewelry business keeps growing and multiplying!

If you have been thinking about starting an eBay jewelry business, this is the time for it. The holidays are coming and people are looking for great gifts to buy for the ones they love.

Most people are also very busy. This means they are going to look for the most convenient way to shop. With today’s computerized world, that means they are often looking to make great purchases online. With a few clicks the shopping is done.

If you are the person who offers a great deal to others, you stand to make some great sales this season

Know Your Niche

The first thing you have to decide is which kind of jewelry you are going to sell:

Low End – These are items that may cost up to $50 each. These are generally no-brainer items when it comes to making a purchase and are items that will be bought by those who are young and on a limited budget as well as those who want to add a little something to a bigger gift.

Middle End – in the $50 – $250 jewelry area is middle end jewelry. These are generally for someone special and will be one of the main gifts for the recipient.

High End – For very discerning tastes comes the high-end jewelry line. These pieces are over $250 a piece and may go into the thousands of dollars. These are special presents that are very important to both the buyer and recipient.

Find Your Supplies

Once you know the kind of jewelry you want to sell, its time to figure out where you are going to get them from. There are essentially two options here.

The first is to purchase wholesale jewelry which is 50% below retail prices. These are often found through wholesale auctions on websites like eBay or from a distributor.

The other option is to purchase pieces of liquidation jewelry. These are pieces that are overstocks, closeouts or returns that have been bundled together for quick sale. Finding the right liquidation auction could land you jewelry at pennies on the dollar compared to their retail price.

Start Selling

Once you have decided on the kind of jewelry that you want to sell, it’s time to start selling. The most important thing to keep in mind with eBay selling is that your picture has to speak for the items you are selling. Make sure your photos are clear and easy to see detail in. If necessary, take more than one shot and upload multiple pictures to give your customers a clear view of what they are purchasing.

Steve Sikes is an MBA and writes articles on wholesale and liquidation auctions and how to make a profit reselling these products. He also writes articles on financial products including insurance and credit cards. To read other articles on wholesale and liquidation auctions and making a profit buying and reselling liquidation clothing, jewelry, electronics, apparel and much more, you will want to visit http://www.WholeSale611.com
